Slutwalk is now Besharmi Morcha

Besharmi Morcha
The Indian version of the slutwalk protest marches spreading around the world was initially planned for the 25th of June, but has now been postponed to the end of July.
When: July 30th, 2011 Where: Delhi
Category: Protest

I like the direction in which we are moving with this one. The delay is good. Will give more time for publicity. I also like the change of name to Besharmi Morcha. Not many Indians understand “Slut”, but being called besharam (shameless) is a fact of life for many of us.

I’m extra thrilled because the name now includes in its meaning the lack of shame in being a woman. And that being a good thing – as in – nothing to be ashamed of.

Unfortunately, the Walk happening in Mumbai that I was so thrilled about turned out to be someone’s idea of a joke looking at “chicks on the dance floor” just goes to show what the people you dance with think, and goes to show how important the walk is.

Am trying to get co-conspirators, seeing as how my time is totally shot, but I hope we do one soon in Mumbai. Actually, I have no doubt we’ll do it. Its a great idea. Impossible that it doesn’t spread to other cities. Specially Mumbai.

The reason for the delay has been to include college students, which is a great idea, since college girls are often the ones facing the most victimization based on judgments about their clothes.

I am really, really happy about how things are moving, and stay tuned to this space for more. In the meanwhile, you may be interested in what a slutwalk is and why it has such a shocking name.
