The post I wrote demanding that the Delhi Police Commissioner resign over his recommendation that women do not travel out alone at night sparked many interesting comments and some debate. Thought these views were important to save from fading out.
I had made some statements while still writing the article.
“ |
The Delhi Police Commissioner should explain how women not traveling alone in the night adds to security for the city. |
“ |
Would be nice if Delhi police paid more attention to policing criminals rather than women. Are men alone safe on Delhi’s streets at night? |
“ |
It is not the women who are the problem on Delhi’s streets at night. It is the police system that is inefficient at it’s job. |
“ |
Is there any exact rule that prohibits cops from being drunk on the job, or would that be discrimination against their significant minority? |
Large majority of people agreed that the women had a right to be safe regardless of gender, time or company. While women are cautious out of necessity, it isn’t something they need to be reminded of, or appreciate hearing from the Police Commissioner who seems ineffective in creating safety for them.
“ |
Police chief BK Gupta should make Delhi men stop travelling in the night so that women are safe |
“ |
@Vidyut dumb idea. Women shud be safe regardless of being in another woman’s company or with a man |
“ |
@Vidyut Thanks for taking all the pain of writing, totally agree with you 🙂 I am gonna share your blog post to many other places. Thanks |
“ |
Once again, @Vidyut in the previously linked post http://t.co/DsXDDku says it right. Delhi Police need to buckle up and fast |
Some Recommended media attention
“ |
Media, take note. RT @Vidyut Delhi Police Commissioner, I demand you resign bit.ly/r5ztGY |
There was talk about attitudes in the police force and in society and the necessity that they be changed.

The Leaf and the Thorn- Misplaced Wisdom of Sexual Education: My Thoughts http://t.co/5d1B4Yc cc @Vidyut @abhijitmajumder |
“ |
@abhijitmajumder How abt BK Gupta making non rapist Delhi men grow some balls 2intervene & stop rapes in broad day light in crowded streets? |
“ |
@amitmehra Many senior cops actually believe women invite rape on themselves. One can imagine the mindset of rest of the cadre |
“ |
@abhijitmajumder Though it’s regressive to think like that but it won’t hurt to be alert & careful. U won’t go 2chicago & yell I hate obama |
“ |
@amitmehra And cops can’t teach Delhi’s men how to behave with women, their parents have to |
“ |
Misogyny is an epidemic of brain disease in India |
Many agreed that police inefficiency was a factor of concern and disagreed with the Police Commissioner’s stance.
“ |
@Vidyut I bet Delhi cops must be the source of half the problems/harrassment for women. |
“ |
@Vidyut This is how we came up with slutwalk when a police offcer Michael Sanguinetti made such a comment 3/4 months back.Wonder hu is safe? |
“ |
@Vidyut Correct. the raison d,’etre of Police is 2 “serve and protect”. Period. Aamjanta has commonsense & doesn’t need prescribing |
“ |
“It is called slutshaming. The idea that the existence of victim invites a crime” from @Vidyut http://t.co/hds4JNg |
“ |
“person recommending that potential victims give up freedoms to keep themselves safe is accountable for lack of safety” http://bit.ly/r5ztGY |
“ |
@Vidyut Good you wrote. I really wonder what’s wrong with all those who are supposed to lead. What message is he sending to the force? |
“ |
@Vidyut The issue is very clear. It is his job to ensure that streets at night are safe for even a lone woman. Not a woman’s. |
“ |
It is his job to keep the streets safe for all, not only women. That he has to do by keeping criminals off the streets not people indoors. |
“ |
@Vidyut Don’t count the one to replace him to be any better if this one resigns. Only difference being, he’ll just keep his mouth shut. |
“ |
@Vidyut Certain things are beyond improvement. You just need to shake apart the whole thing and build anew. |
“ |
@NilimDutta my kind of man. If it’s not working, take it apart 😀 |
“ |
“In the long run, what matters that you keep your eyes on the goal, and keep trying” ~ @Vidyut |
“ |
@Vidyut All a problem needs is the will to solve, intelligence to understand, patience to work at it, and sense of purpose to see it through |
“ |
Am I to understand that a police force which cannot ensure safety of women in the National Capital hopes fight and win against the Maoists? |
“ |
+1 RT @NilimDutta: Now don’t go off on Delhi Police, this police, that police…I am talking of the same IPS who leads everywhere. |
“ |
@Vidyut Delhi Police Commissioner consider before advising “even ensuring professional standards in the force will make Delhi streets safer” |
“ |
@Vidyut bitter truth …but seriously i got shocked whn i heard his statement and #corruptMedia personals were laughing like jackass’s |
There was agreement with the article, but awareness of the need to provide better resources to the police and prevent their misappropriation to other unrelated tasks.
“ |
Fully agree with @vidyut’s post. http://t.co/lV1bjXJ | Also, society & state must not load police with all sorts of jobs. |
There was anger about his attitude.
“ |
@Vidyut haha…he said women should be escorted with male companions .sure sir & police people will jerk off in police stations.. sick |
“ |
@Vidyut dnt blame him for his ideology …god forbid if one of his female relatives gets rapped or molested he will understand that time |
“ |
@Vidyut The commissioner is advising women to just stop venturing out at night in entirety? Haha, some fucking country this is. |
“ |
@eclecticV Country isn’t fucking dear , its the A**hole commissioner that really sucks!! @Vidyut |
“ |
@CuteIndianBitch Same difference. Country isn’t a separate entity, the building blocks of it are the law makers and enforcers. @Vidyut |
“ |
@Vidyut Yes I just read it. Very chauvinistic and convenient for him. He wants women to be scared of all the rapists. |
“ |
@Vidyut thanx for tagging,I read it.It jus shows d polices inability to provide adequate security cover.They … http://tmi.me/cNTcn |
Other instances of misogyny by authority figures in the country were debated.
“ |
@Vidyut Sheila said that too when HT reporter was murdered. @dibang @Roflindian @raggedtag @rwac48 @sunil_abraham |
Madhavan Narayanan made some strong points about money being a factor in police being able to provide adequate security and saw the recommendation as pragmatic.
“ |
Less than 25 mn Indians pay tax in a nation of 1.1 bln people, 382 mln below poverty line. Don’t expect the moon of the government @Vidyut |
“ |
@Vidyut Police’s job is to be practical. They have limited resources. Cultural behaviour cannot be shaped by police. Tell the PM whatever! |
“ |
@Vidyut Governance is a broader issue.Police know their limits. Their pragmatism cant be called slutshaming. PM owes larger responsibility |
“ |
Resign. @Vidyut: Delhi Police Commissioner, I demand you resign http://bit.ly/r5ztGY @KetPan @madversity @PunditComment @moonsez @Uberschizo |
“ |
@madversity @Vidyut sorry, no. of taxpayers immaterial when majority tax collection thru excise/sales tax, customs etc. |
“ |
@madversity @Vidyut does it mean we should tolerate inefficiency, wastage of funds in Govt. schemes? |
“ |
@madversity is it pragmatism? serious issues w/ police negligience – harassment, drunkenness, refusal 2 file FIRs, botched investigations |
“ |
@madversity these don’t need funds |
“ |
@madversity @Vidyut the remaining 693m must be farmers then |
“ |
@Vidyut I didnt mean those. Those are necessary. My comment limited to the advice he gave to women. |
“ |
@atulkanji No. Work to make it better, while realising your role as an elite, not a beneficiary @Vidyut |
“ |
@madversity but it is the failure of those whose results he is calmly accepting with the big fix of hiding the women. |
“ |
@Vidyut No. I am not sure of that. Administrative systems are under stress because of pressures. Too many people, too many problems |
“ |
@Vidyut @madversity our system plays passing the blame game. No1 seems to take d responsibility, as a result citizems face the mysic. |
“ |
@rameshsrivats But the Govt *IS* mooning all of us. @madversity @vidyut |
“ |
@madversity it would be pragmatic if he says do this for a few months while we fix the problem. No such intent. |
“ |
@madversity @Vidyut compared to population to population crime against women is much lower in india than US but projection is otherwise |
“ |
@anushreekejriwa @Vidyut I relate everything to 1 billion people. If you count it that way, things appear in a different light. |
“ |
@madversity There aren’t 1 billion people in Delhi. It is the capital of country. Expecting accountability is reasonable @rameshsrivats |
“ |
@Vidyut Delhi is now a mini-India,cosmopolitan,migrant-heavy and with 5 towns – Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Noida, Delhi, New Delhi! |
“ |
@madversity every indian pays indirect taxes. @Vidyut |
“ |
@Bhuwan_Pandey The devil is in the detail. Paying taxes is the minimum obligation. I am talking maximum responsibility @Vidyut |
“ |
Thanks for all comments/queries. The burden of my message is simple-You are not subjects, but citizens.Participate in politics, stop whining |
“ |
@madversity all those areas have their tax payers. also doing your job doesn’t take extra funds. It takes management. |
“ |
@Vidyut Management costs money, resources, time, energy. A call centre accent trainer gets as much as DCP! |
“ |
@rameshsrivats Not sure. But yes, agree that corruption and leakage need to stop @Vidyut |
“ |
@madversity I think it is more. Too much complacency. No real intent. @rameshsrivats |
“ |
@madversity @rameshsrivats @Vidyut What about 90,000 crores wasted on Kashmir? |
“ |
@rameshsrivats agree. Had written in another. This is me blowing a fuse 😛 |
“ |
@madversity @rameshsrivats @Vidyut with that amount of money spent on Kashmir, we could have Appollo in 20o districts, or 150 AIIMS. |
“ |
@madversity people elect govt to create systems for that. Those running the system r accountable – not once in 5yr type accntblty. @Vidyut |
“ |
@madversity We should do away with direct taxes. Doesn’t work in India. @Vidyut |
“ |
@madversity @Vidyut and govt is after people who r paying regular taxes. Their thinking agar jyaada it deta hai to adha chhupata hoga. |
“ |
@madversity agree on social engagement and improved resources to enhance, not function. Will to clean messes must be seen @CuteIndianBitch |
“ |
@madversity @Vidyut Stuff the moon. How about some old-fashioned honest governance? |
“ |
@nimishdubey I haven’t found honest governance in any era of Indian politics ,wich part of the wrld r u talking of . @madversity @Vidyut |
“ |
@CuteIndianBitch @madversity @Vidyut The more the reason to expect, nay, demand, it. |
“ |
@madversity @Vidyut OMG 382mn r still BPL despit of havin fastest growing economy .i thought govt was doin well all d time in its tenure |
“ |
ALL pay taxes . Service Tax ,excise, customs, etc etc. Even when you buy bidi you pay tax . 25mn pay income tax . @madversity @Vidyut |
“ |
@madversity @Vidyut and 90% of them must be salaried class!!! Poor guys don’t have a choice |
Some thought that the Delhi Police Commissioner had it right
“ |
@rameshsrivats @madversity @vidyut if police are allowed to help women walk on streets more crime will happen |
“ |
@ChandansCharm @Vidyut tell me ten reasons why women go out in night. Give m ten reasons why they cannot do that in the day time |
“ |
@Vidyut This is a fact, commissioners only mistake is that he spoke |
Dr. Anand Phillips shared his discovery of the need for more feminist thought in society.
“ |
When, some 7 years ago i started readying feminist literature and read about “Rape culture” my first reaction was “not in India” 1/2 |
“ |
Then, inspired by the readings, and later by @BLANK_NOISE I asked my girl friends, and every single one of them reported groping & more 2/2 |
“ |
It is only now, that the information that i have imbibed over the years is starting to come together and I see it, we have Rape culture too |
