Voices about Delhi Police Commissioner’s Statement

The post I wrote demanding that the Delhi Police Commissioner resign over his recommendation that women do not travel out alone at night sparked many interesting comments and some debate. Thought these views were important to save from fading out.
I had made some statements while still writing the article.
The Delhi Police Commissioner should explain how women not traveling alone in the night adds to security for the city.

Vidyut

July 9, 2011

Would be nice if Delhi police paid more attention to policing criminals rather than women. Are men alone safe on Delhi’s streets at night?

Vidyut

July 9, 2011

It is not the women who are the problem on Delhi’s streets at night. It is the police system that is inefficient at it’s job.

Vidyut

July 9, 2011

Is there any exact rule that prohibits cops from being drunk on the job, or would that be discrimination against their significant minority?

Vidyut

July 9, 2011

Large majority of people agreed that the women had a right to be safe regardless of gender, time or company. While women are cautious out of necessity, it isn’t something they need to be reminded of, or appreciate hearing from the Police Commissioner who seems ineffective in creating safety for them.
Police chief BK Gupta should make Delhi men stop travelling in the night so that women are safe

abhijitmajumder

July 9, 2011

@Vidyut dumb idea. Women shud be safe regardless of being in another woman’s company or with a man

@abhijitmajumder How abt BK Gupta making non rapist Delhi men grow some balls 2intervene & stop rapes in broad day light in crowded streets?

amitmehra

July 9, 2011

@amitmehra Many senior cops actually believe women invite rape on themselves. One can imagine the mindset of rest of the cadre

abhijitmajumder

July 9, 2011

@abhijitmajumder Though it’s regressive to think like that but it won’t hurt to be alert & careful. U won’t go 2chicago & yell I hate obama

Many agreed that police inefficiency was a factor of concern and disagreed with the Police Commissioner’s stance.
@Vidyut I bet Delhi cops must be the source of half the problems/harrassment for women.

@Vidyut Good you wrote. I really wonder what’s wrong with all those who are supposed to lead. What message is he sending to the force?

NilimDutta

July 9, 2011

@Vidyut The issue is very clear. It is his job to ensure that streets at night are safe for even a lone woman. Not a woman’s.

NilimDutta

July 9, 2011

It is his job to keep the streets safe for all, not only women. That he has to do by keeping criminals off the streets not people indoors.

NilimDutta

July 9, 2011

@Vidyut Don’t count the one to replace him to be any better if this one resigns. Only difference being, he’ll just keep his mouth shut.
