These tweets speak for themselves, but what you really need to read is Sonali’s analysis and argument for agriculture reforms
n her blog on how our economy opening up selectively has led to the farmers being steadily drained of resources and is increasingly rendering them powerless. The first time I read this, I was struck by the shock of analysis being applied to agriculture. It is so rare, that as you read the ideas, they feel alien, even as you understand and recognize what it describes.
Definitely worth a read.
I urge that we think about agriculture seriously. I had written in the article on suicide
, “I see suicides as an indicator of failing systems”. It is a sign of a society dying out, as its weaker ones start exiting. Particularly when there is a large number or increase in suicides. And we all know what our farmers are up to.
We are one of the largest populations, largest countries in the world. Majority of our population is rural. We have vast areas of land available for cultivation. The potential for both devastation and transformation is mind blowing. We need to do this. Agricultural reform.
