So, to quickly touch points that matter to victims of Marital Rape:

  1. Marital Rape is grounds for recognized by law and grounds for divorce.
  2. Other laws depending on the situation will be involved in determining what the actual punishment of the rapist will be.
  3. There can be provisions made to ensure the safety of the victim from retaliatory harm. A lawyer would be able to arrange them with knowledge of options possible.
  4. A lawyer should be able to guide you as to how to proceed and invoke appropriate protection while the case reaches a conclusion. This protection can include protection from family, in-laws or others as needed.
  5. Meeting a counselor before taking recourse with the law is recommended. Many reasons – the mental trauma of rape, the irrevocable milestone in the relationship and very likely divorce, figuring out options.
  6. Strong advice is to take legal recourse on Marital Rape, get a divorce and move on.
  7. There needs to be stronger recognition of Marital Rape in our legal system – or – stronger implementation of existing laws against it.
  8. There need to be ways to prevent misuse of these laws made for the protection of women to prevent wrongdoing against men/others and to prevent defensive resistance of men to women’s empowerment initiatives.
  9. There needs to be more awareness of these laws, as often the ones who need them don’t know, and the ones who do misuse.
  10. Don’t suffer Marital Rape in silence, you have options to keep your body and dignity safe.
A very very big thanks to @saima2000 @Swatysmalik @jay_ambadi @Sumit_Nagpal for being here for us and patiently answering all. #MRape #VAWAM
