Dear RTI users and activists,

We have noted that citizens using RTI are being labelled as blackmailers, and are subjected to verbal and physical attacks.

Things have reached a stage where a municipal commissioner has illegally barred all employees of a NGO from seeking information and others are being abused, threatened and attacked. Our fundamental right and self-respect is at stake.

It is time we came together to exchange notes about some issues and put up a united front. Here are some issues that need discussion:

Insisting on compliance with Sec. 4 of the RTI act in line with the DOPT OM and the Maharashtra GR. We demand that all RTI applications and responses be displayed on the website as mandated. This will reduce the need for RTI applications and any charge of blackmail.

We insist on accountability of government organisations and regulators for providing proper answers, and respect to the RTI users.

May I suggest that we meet on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss these issues and how to take them forward? The first meeting would be on 7th February from 5 pm to 7 pm at Moneylife Foundation, Shivaji Park.

I suggest a meeting at the same place and time for consistency and regularity. I urge you to forward this to others who may want to attend. I also suggest we use the hashtag #RTIBachao
