People of Baljeet Nagar to start an indefinite hunger strike in Jantar Mantar to protest against illegal and continuing threat of demolitions in Punjabi Basti.

In response to the brutal demolitions undertaken by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on 5th July 2017 at Punjabi Basti, Baljeet Nagar in West Delhi, the people of Punjabi Basti have submitted multiple requests to National Human Rights Commission, Delhi Commission for Women, Lt. Governor and The Chief Minister of Delhi expressing our concerns regarding the illegal demolition carried out by DDA and violence unleashed by the Delhi Police. All of these authorities have questioned the actions by DDA and Police as unwarranted and ordered multiple enquires into the case in the last month.

However, the DDA and Delhi Police, ignoring our pleas and multiple inquiries are continuing to threaten the community with evictions and all this without assessing the claims and demands of the community, which is more than 15 years old. DDA is carrying out these demolitions without following due process of law and ignoring the existing constitutional and legal safeguards to ensure the rights of the community. This indefinite hunger strike, without food and water, beginning from 16.08.2017 is to draw the attention of DDA and other authorities to the plight of women and children in Punjabi Basti, Baljeet Nagar, who since the last one month have been living out in the open without proper relief provisions defying the processes and protocols to be adhered to in evictions and demolitions.
