Giving credit where it is due

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

There are many articles I have been reading all over the place that have contributed to this “changed me” as a blogger. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for all the helpful flood of words that finally helped me to get into gear.

  • Don’t Let Emotion Be MIA In Your Content by Darren Rowse. This blog of his is an unending source of ideas, motivation, inspiration… you name it. I go there everyday.
  • WordPress Plugins for Multiple Blogger Blogs This post gave me great insights for applying on the other site I administrate - the ISABS Mumbai Chapter weblog, put shortly, this is ISABS T-group training in India, and a very small group of people. Promoting ht eblog, as well giving access to other bloggers is a pain. This page worked better than prescription medicine. Lorelle puts in a lot of effort into creating very resourceful posts.
  • 31 Days to Building a Better Blog uh… again from problogger.com This time its an entire category of posts that help you do this…… Haven’t gone through the whole thing, but I will. What’s more, I will APPLY my learnings. What do I do… I’m hooked. I’m stuck on this site till I manage to Read through most of the posts……
  • Useit.com has a very useful series of articles on understanding reader behaviour. And NO, I have not read it yet, its on my to-do list. If I had, don’t you think I’d be in a happier situation?

Mike Arrington in pagerank purgatory and second on search

Saturday, June 14th, 2008
So, I learn something new everyday. I was hunting around for Reviewme related something or the other (I forget) and I came across this post by Mike on his Deep Jive Interests blog.

He said that a possibility for his blog not qualifying for Reviewme was his being in “pagerank purgatory”… His is a nice blog. I didn’t see why he would be in such a condition, but the plugin I have that shows pageranks was indeed empty on that page (it works on others).

Strange! I shrugged and was about to move on, when I realized that purgatory or not, this was the second result for my search on GOOGLE!!!

Sheesh!!! I will never understand how pagerank works. I mean, if something is removed from rankings and still shows up on the first three listings……. what is really happening here?

I’m commenting on his post to find out if he can tell me how much traffic he gets from Google, purgatory or not.

My friend got ripped off!

Monday, April 14th, 2008
Is this your story?

I got a request from a friend who did not have a credit card to use mine for an online purchase he wanted to make. The amount was ahrdly anything, so I agreed. I use virtual cards for online purchases, so I wasn’t too worried about safety.

Turns out that this guy had been had by the scammer pirateaccess.com

He used the card to register and went to a page that was a place holder instead of a login area. Turns out that the site advertises cracked software.

The process is simple:

  1. Create entire lists and advertise cracks for every software you know.
  2. Put adds all over the net and optimize your site so that anyone searching for Dreamweaver crack, or Photoshop Crack, or full version, etc find the site.
  3. Claim that there is a nominal fee for entry into the member’s area
  4. Redirect to a porn site for a 3 day membership (should expire before the gullible fools can figure anything out)
  5. Have a submission form that can churn out a random string.
  6. Have a link that says login and goes to a blank page (or better still, a page saying “you’ve been had!”)
  7. Watch your bank balance grow.

The beauty of this is that no one is going to sue you for cheating them from access to pirated stuff. The amount is not big enough to make anyone seriously pissed.

So folks, if you don’t even see a contact link for the webmaster…… I guess its not too smart to put your money in.

SEO friendly nukes

Monday, October 15th, 2007
I’ve been missing from here for quite a few days. The thing is, I’ve been trying to figure out ways of making my postnuked library section on my website more humane in terms of titles, keywords, description tags and stuff.

There really isn’t much to go with, and I’m wondering if I can attempt to create of modify modules so that they do what I want them to do. The glitch is that I have never ever attempted php coding before, and a postnuke module of that kind of complexity is not exactly easy.

I’ve been spending my days just reading code and understanding what is happening with it, like people read novels, or watch foreign films and attempt to understand.

Hopefully, I should be able to come up with something sane. Otherwise, I’ll return here to whine.

Vichare couriers

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

If you live and work in Mumbai, you have heard of Vichare couriers, and most likely, used them. You may have sent couriers, received them, whatever. You just can’t remain in Mumbai and untouched by them. They are like cockroaches - everywhere - but in a nice way.

I had always thought of Vichare couriers in a certain way. I had this mental image - middle class Maharashtrian. The surname for one, the tendency to have tiny, dingy offices in literally any place possible to put a table and a chair or two, unsophisticated, vernacular staff, an overall image of lack of polish. It is true. They are like that.

However, like many Maharashtrian “greats” these humble impressions hide a greatness many of us can’t begin to imagine.

Now that I am thinking of their greatness angle, I think of the famous dabbawallas of Mumbai - illiterate, low paid bunch of people making a living delivering lunches. But together, they may not provide style, but a blinding efficiency management colleges study.

Vichare couriers are like that in some ways. Their service is the cheapest around. Their offices are outnumbered perhaps only by local paan walas. Literally every area has an office, and no matter where you are, picking up a package is something they will happily hop across to do.

Their offices may be dingy, but you rarely need to go to them - their people come and make pickups easily. Their people may not speak English well, they may not wear really smart uniforms, and look westernized, but really, do they need to, as long as the courier reaches on time? And it does. They deliver. They are incredibly efficient for people who seem so “dumb”.

I came across their website today, and discovered a new side to Vichare couriers. Their website is “posh” - “polished” and as always, efficient. The typical middle class humility shines through all that even then. Service first - and you have an array of services, idiot-proof and really easy “nearest office locator” and also a way to simply book a pick up online.

After “service first” comes “responsibilities first” - there is a lovely section - totally unprofessionally personal - if we speak of polished images, but touching none the less. We have activities of employees, their sports teams, investment improvements, swelling numbers, praise, pictures from felicitations….. The feeling of involvement is so strong, that I felt tempted to be one of them.

And guess what? There was a section on”investment opportunities” if you have some space to spare - enough for a table and couple of chairs for a “point of contact” to be developed. It would be a tiny investment, and I’m willing to bet that it would be one of the most secure places to put your money. These guys aren’t ever planning to sink.

Uh, after that comes…….? I know as a matter of fact that these guys have won some major awards, achieved phenomenal growth over a very short time, and so on. If there is any very justified bragging, I couldn’t find it easily. That “middle-class Maharashtrian” humility to the point of invisibility is also present.

So there, folks, here is a lesson in presentation - do your job, and the impression follows. Another lesson in being inclusive - roam around on the site, and I bet you want to go back for its utility, information and sheer inclusive “feeling of belonging”. And another huge lesson in being yourself - your staff is mainly vernacular, so what. You can do your job, and you do it so well, you beat all competition hands down.

Way to go folks!
